Dear CT,

How do you cope with annoying people in hostels/tours? Ignoring them might taint your experience… but confrontation is always awkward. How do you handle people who won’t stop talking to you/are inappropriate/complain etc?

Hi Anders,

Thank you for your question!

We understand this can be frustrating and can have a negative impact on your travels and there might not be a lot you can do. However, we do have some tips to help you through this tough time. If it reaches the stage that every aspect of that person (such as breathing) is slowly torturing you try to widen your circle. Spend time with others in your tour/ hostel and try to politely keep your distance from your foe.  If this isn’t enough, be assertive with the person and let them know how you feel. We know this confrontation can be awkward but open communication can help relieve the issue. If it’s a noisy hostel roomie, ask to swap rooms or use earplugs and a facemask to block out the light. If all else fails, remember this is only temporary, enjoy your trip because when you are home reminiscing about the good times you won’t remember that one annoying person.
