Dear CT,

What’s the best way to really immerse yourself in the culture of the locations you visit when you don’t speak the local’s language?

Hi Jeffery,

Thank you for your question!

Firstly, don’t let a language barrier get in your way, there are still plenty of ways to immerse yourself in the local culture. Where possible try to learn the basics of the language such as ‘please’, ‘thank you’, ‘where is xx’, ‘yes’, ‘no’, etc. These basics will help you navigate your new environment. Another way to immerse yourself in the culture is by following their schedule. This means if the locals head home for a large lunch with family followed by an afternoon siesta, you should adopt the same practices. But in order to do things on your host country’s schedule, you have to be observant, that’s the key element to this step. Another way to immerse yourself in culture is to take local friends. While the language barrier may limit your communication abilities, joining a local sporting group or cooking class can help you make friends while trying activities the locals enjoy.
